Chugga Chugga Charts

These charts can be used most successfully with double knitting but an adventurous knitter may adapt them into stranded knitting or intarsia or some combination of the two.

I used wool-ease with an Italian tubular cast-on and then double knit 7 plain rows the caboose three repeats of the passenger car, coal car and engine and 7 more plain rows. I used a sewn cast-off to match the cast-on. It measures appx. 5" x 72" with a gauge of 5 sts per inch on size 7 needles.

Enjoy these charts but please, only use them for personal projects or gifts.

Here's the finished object!

This is amazing! I saw you post the picture on Ravelry, I showed it to oldest son who loved it so I think I might make it for his 18th birthday in September.

I've never tried double knitting before, but this is interesting enough to stop me getting bored!

Thank you so much for posting this AND making it free :0)

Mahalo for sharing your charts. My nephew in Virginia loves trains and so I'm planning to knit a solid blanket using your train charts. This'll be the first time I'll be winging such a big project like this. I hope it comes out fine by this Christmas.

Aloha there! I finished the train blanket. I have the finished product posted on Ravelry. I'm under the same name: Kekumukula if you're interested.

Hi Laura - I love your train motifs and want to make the double knit blanket for my grandson. It occurs to me though if I knit it either starting on the long side or the short side the motifs will only work in one direction and the scale will be wrong in the other. So I thought of knitting in "in the round" starting in the middle and increasing at each of the 4 corners. If I did that could you please give me a hint as to how to increase it so that I end up with a rectangle instead of a square? Alternatively I could knit it in 4 triangles but would still need the same guidance as to rate of increase. Thank you in advance.

Ok. I just finished the caboose! I must have ripped out the stitches 30 times, BUT It is now working perfectly. Tips for those who are new to knitting and find this frustrating. 1) use the Italian tubular cast on as demonstrated at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kchCdWHsF1E&t=452s. 2) to get your selvedge edges even and pretty, use the video at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0-BLtYkAfa8. The bird sounds and folksiness will be annoying, but her stitches really work great. 3) Use a magnetic board and magnet strips to keep your place. Double knitting is easy IF you stay focused—it’s hard to multitask with this project.

Another thing. The passenger car is 21 stitches wide on the chart, all others are 22 stitches, so you’ll need to add a row to the passenger car. The pattern is so cute. I just hope I can finish it for my 3-year-old grandson before he goes off to college! 😍
